I scoured the web for information about this SUV but came up empty-handed. However, recently, my quest for knowledge finally bore fruit.

Perhaps you recall the Lamborghini LM002, produced in limited numbers during that era, which can be deemed unique in its own right, deserving comparison with the enigmatic SUV concept at hand.
This exceptional concept car was the brainchild of a Canadian company. As a nation, Canada had virtually no automotive industry of its own. Thus, when this futuristic-looking SUV concept (as it was not referred to at the time) made its debut, it took the world by surprise. The grand reveal took place at the 1989 Geneva Motor Show. Vehma International, a subsidiary of the Canadian auto parts giant, Magna International, spearheaded the entire engineering process, from inception to prototype production. The Vehma Torrero super SUV aimed to showcase the capabilities of the Ontario-based company in designing and manufacturing premium vehicles on an international scale.
Back then, the Vehma Torrero was available to interested buyers for a price exceeding $100,000. For that sum, you could acquire a vehicle equipped with top-notch amenities and cutting-edge technology, capable of conquering even the most treacherous terrains. The automaker claimed a highway top speed of 150 mph (240 km/h), making it an exceedingly versatile car.

Looking at the available images of the Vehma Torrero, it's hard to escape the notion that it still looks futuristic today, even after decades have passed. In 1988, it must have been a true spectacle on the streets, considering the state of automotive production during that era. Its three-door design gives it an otherworldly appearance. The front end is dominated by a sizable bumper, housing four main headlights. Additionally, round fog lights complemented the lower section of the bumper.

The concept's body featured a distinctive two-tone scheme, with the cabin's glazing solution drawing attention. The glass extended over the pillars, akin to later production models like the Citroën XM and Subaru SVX. The Vehma Torrero also sported side glass cutouts on its doors, which were the only ones that could be opened. This feature, commonly seen in racing cars, was likely chosen to optimize the vehicle's aerodynamics, much like the Subaru SVX.

The manufacturer employed reinforced composites for the exterior panels, presumably to reduce the vehicle's weight. Nevertheless, the car still tipped the scales at a hefty 2,223 kg, significantly more than today's luxury SUVs.

What truly set the Vehma Torrero apart was its powertrain. Nestled under the front hood was an eight-cylinder engine boasting a remarkable 8.1-liter displacement and an output of 532 hp (391 kW). This extraordinary powerplant was crafted by Vehma's Eagle Engine Co. units in California. It defied expectations, featuring a DOHC V8 configuration, with each cylinder housing four valves and even two spark plugs, essentially a twin-spark setup. The Canadians claimed a maximum torque of 770 Nm.

The engine was mated to an automatic transmission, positioned just behind it, with power directed to the rear axle via a unique transfer unit with an inter-axle differential. Subsequently, each axle had its dedicated driveshaft, with the front axle being driven from back to front. The Vehma Torrero employed two articulated driveshafts, arranged one atop the other, reminiscent of the contemporary Nissan GT-R's design. The vehicle featured permanent all-wheel drive.

The cabin also accommodated a color television receiver, a navigation system, a telephone, a personal computer, and a fax machine – all the entertainment and communication technology one would expect in a household of that era. Philips and International Automotive Design played pivotal roles in these innovations. A "Lazy Susan" table-style rotary keyboard, located in front of the gear selector alongside a keyboard with an integrated telephone display, simplified the operation of these systems.

Unique ONES - In 1968, the renowned American toymaker, Mattel, introduced a remarkable line of 1:64 scale die-cast cars named Hot Wheels. The initial release featured 16 "customized" versions of popular car models such as the Camaro, Corvette, and Mustang. However, within the same year, Ira Gilford, a Hot Wheels designer, embarked on conceptualizing what would later become the iconic Twin Mill, officially unveiled in 1969.

The Twin Mill's design was nothing short of striking. It boasted massive dual engines with imposing scoops at the front and wide, exposed wheels at the rear. To this day, approximately 12 million of these miniature marvels have been produced. Among avid Hot Wheels collectors, a mint, in-the-package original Twin Mill can fetch an impressive $800.

Apart from Ira Gilford, other notable designers left their mark on the Twin Mill legacy. Bruce Baur, credited as the designer of the Twin Mill II in 1993, and Josh Henson, the mind behind the Twin Mill III in 2008. The color scheme of red and green was retained for the "Then and Now" Twin Mill 2014 series, mirroring the hues of its real-life counterpart.
While die-cast cars typically replicate real vehicle models, the Twin Mill dared to defy convention. In a fascinating twist, a life-sized Twin Mill was created, expanding the famous 1:64 scale die-cast car to a 1:24 scale replica.

Fast forward to 1998, during the 30th anniversary celebration of the beloved Hot Wheels series, an executive at Mattel conceived the idea of bringing a life-sized Hot Wheels car into existence. This ambitious undertaking was entrusted to Boyd Coddington of Hot Rods by Boyd, with Chip Foose at the helm of the project. Regrettably, Hot Rods by Boyd faced financial woes and went bankrupt later that year. However, the incomplete Twin Mill project remained unscathed when collectors swooped in to clear the remnants.
The fate of the project took a turn when Hot Wheels Director Carson Lev revived the Twin Mill and enlisted Barry Lobeck to complete the ambitious endeavor. The fully-realized car made its grand debut at the 2001 SEMA show in Las Vegas, earning resounding acclaim from enthusiasts and spectators alike.
The Twin Mill, in its full-sized glory, is not merely a showpiece; it's a functioning vehicle. Sporting front and rear lights, turn signals, and two colossal 502 big block engines, it churns out an estimated 1,400 horsepower in total. This powerhouse of a car can achieve speeds of up to 270 kilometers per hour. However, in terms of ergonomics, the Twin Mill falls short of comfort due to the obstructed driver's view caused by the two massive engines positioned in front of them. ONE-OFF - When we delve into the world of classic cars, one cannot help but be captivated by the allure of Cadillac. In particular, the 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Town Car concept holds a special place in automotive history, with its timeless elegance and undeniable influence on luxury car design. This exceptional vehicle not only showcased the pinnacle of opulence but also set a standard that would resonate through the years.

In the mid-1950s, Cadillac was determined to assert its dominance in the luxury car market. The Eldorado Brougham was conceived as a response to Ford Motor Company's Continental Mark II, but in reality, it surpassed the Mark II in various aspects. It was more exotic, more exclusive, and boasted a price tag nearly a third higher than the Mark II's $10,000.
Under the hood, the Eldorado Brougham featured a V8 OHV engine with an impressive 305bhp output. Its engine was a work of art, with gold-plated valve covers, dual 4-barrel carburetors, and custom-made air cleaners. This powerhouse was complemented by a 4-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission, independent front suspension, and 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, which ensured a smooth and comfortable ride.

While the Brougham was ready for production in 1957, it made its debut on the show circuit in 1956, including appearances at the Motorama tour and the Paris Salon. Known as project XP-48 within GM Styling, the four-door hardtop Brougham had a lesser-known sibling, the Eldorado Brougham Town Car, which premiered at the New York Motorama held at the illustrious Waldorf Astoria.
The Town Car, constructed primarily from fiberglass, was more of a concept car than a prototype. Standing at just 55.5 inches in height, it featured a half-roof over the passenger compartment, adorned with luxurious black leather. Unlike its hardtop counterpart, the Town Car sported an open chauffeur's compartment, a different roofline, and more understated side trim.

The interior of the Town Car was a testament to luxury. The passenger compartment was appointed with beige leather in a "biscuit and button" motif, accented with gold trim. The chauffeur's area featured black Moroccan leather and chrome accents. The passenger section was equipped with twin compartments, complete with a decanter and cups, a vanity case, and a tissue dispenser – all meticulously plated in gold. A sliding glass window in the divider bulkhead allowed for communication with the chauffeur, and a bulkhead-mounted telephone, also in gold, made communication even more convenient.
The 1956 Motorama tour, known as the "Highway of Tomorrow," took the Town Car from New York to Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston. In October, it graced the stage at the Paris Salon, where it garnered considerable acclaim. However, as the season ended, the Brougham entered production, and the Town Car began to fade into obscurity. Like many GM concepts and prototypes, it found its place in the Warhoops salvage yard outside Detroit in December 1959.

But fate had other plans for this extraordinary creation. The Town Car remained under a tarp for years until it was rediscovered by Joe Bortz, a renowned Chicago entrepreneur, collector, and restorer, in 1989. Bortz, known for his passion for rescuing and collecting concept cars and GM Motorama alumni, did not undertake its restoration. Instead, he sold it to Roy Warshawsky, owner of J.C. Whitney, in the early 1990s. Unfortunately, Warshawsky's untimely passing left the restoration unfinished. The car then changed hands, with Dick Baruk of Detroit briefly owning it.

Finally, RM Auto Restoration took on the task of restoring this gem. A significant part of the project involved fitting the car with a V8 engine from a 1956 Cadillac sedan donor car. The engine compartment received the same lavish treatment, with gold-plated valve covers, dual four-barrel carburetors, and unique air cleaners. Although the restoration was not geared towards making the car roadworthy, it was designed to enable the lucky new owner to showcase the car at events and transport it on and off trailers.
After its restoration was complete, the Cadillac found a new home in the collection of John O'Quinn, a prominent Houston collector. It was meticulously cared for in a climate-controlled environment and occasionally lent out for museum exhibits.
Although several years have passed since its restoration, the Town Car still exudes a timeless charm. The whitewall tires may have yellowed slightly, but the gold trim remains vibrant. The steering wheel and dashboard are well-preserved, featuring the original Wonderbar signal-seeking radio. The car boasts air conditioning for both the front and rear, and the passenger compartment is adorned with deep-pile Wilton carpeting that perfectly complements the beige leather.
In a world where bulky stretch limousines have become the norm, the Eldorado Brougham Town Car stands out as a svelte and sophisticated classic. Its allure, elegance, and undeniable influence on luxury car design make it the perfect choice to astonish onlookers at any concours event.
