100-ft image of mythical creature found in Peru

A new Nazca geoglyph has been uncovered by Japanese scientists in Peru, and it could be linked to a major ceremonial center. Measuring 98-feet long, the geoglyph is located within the central area of the Nazca pampa, a large, flat, arid region of Peru between the Andes and the coast. The line drawing is of an animal, with many legs and spotted markings, sticking out its tongue.

"It certainly represents an imaginary or mythical creature," Masato Sakai at the Yamagata University in Japan, said.

Last year a team lead by Sakai discovered dozens of new geoglyphs of animals in the same area using to 3-D scans of the ground. This time, the researchers just spotted the new lines when walking on the Nazca plateau.

"Because the geoglyph is located on the slopes, it can easily be identified on the ground level," Sakai told Discovery News.

Mostly known for their massive desert images of animals and birds, the Nazca flourished in Peru between the first century B.C. and the seventh century A.D. and slid into oblivion by the time the Inca Empire rose to dominate the Andes.

The new geoglyph is estimated to date back to the Late Paracas Period (400 B.C. to 200 B.C.). The dating comes from earlier versions of the motifs previously found on the pampa, which are believed to have been created at the Late Paracas period.

The geoglyph features a different technique than most famous Nazca lines. Typical of the Late Paracas Period, the technique relies on the white ground which lies underneath the black oxidized pebbles of the pampa.

"This new animal drawing was created by removing dark surface stones and exposing the underlying whitish ground," Sakai said. "The removed stones were then piled up to shape the animal image like a relief." He believes the animal drawing might be linked to the vast ceremonial center of Cahuachi, which contains about 40 mounds topped with adobe structures.

"We discovered another geoglyph in 2011, not far from the newly found one," Sakai said. "It was created using the same technique and showed a pair of anthropomorphic figures in a scene of decapitation." Decapitation was a popular activity within the Nazca civilization, which was obsessed over trophy heads. They seem to have used the human heads for their ceremonial activity. Both geoglyphs were located on the slopes, so that they could easily be identified on the ground level.

"Between these two geoglyphs, there is an ancient path leading to the ceremonial center of Cahuachi," Sakai said. He believes the geoglyphs were probably related to the pilgrimage to Cahuachi. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | LIVESCIENCE]

Radical aroma of Bavarian Fistfighter

Here it is the figure of the BMW R Ninet that looks more fierce and thicker with radical aroma as the kings on the streets. By the cold hands of a talented modifier like Winston Yeh of Rough Crafts then born nice looking motorcycle called 'Bavarian Fistfighter' which is a redesigned version of the BMW R nineT and made to look modern and aggressive.

The motorcycle has a bit of everything in his intimidating look. It’s an interesting combination of a vintage BMW look and a modern motorcycle. It’s bulky and completely black. It’s fair to say that it belongs right beside the Batmobile. On this bike is featuring some parts that look like the BMW motorcycles used during the 1970’s and 1980’s, like the fuel tank for example. So that’s the secret behind this vintage look.

On the other hand, when it comes to electronics, the Bavarian Fistfighter is equipped with modern essentials such as fuel pump, electronics box and battery. The bike builder, Winston Yeh said that he was inspired by many BMW models when he was customizing this one. The nose fairing for example was completely inspired by the classic and iconic R 90 S model. The solo seat was inspired by the vintage BMW models from the 1950s but this one has been wrapped in beautiful black leather.

This bike is completely covered with black paint except the logo on the fuel tank and exhaust pipe.
The Fuel tank was inspired by the ones made during the late 70s and early 80s.
This bike has a 1170 cc engine that can produce up to 110 horsepower.
The leather seat was inspired by the seats from the models made in the 1950’s.

And for the drivetrain, Bavarian Fistfighter is packed with the 1,170 cc boxer twin engine that can produce up to 110 hp. The builder left the engine completely naked in order to achieve the mighty look. As we said earlier, the bike is completely covered with black paint except the logo on the fuel tank and exhaust pipe.
The wheels are entirely new. They were made by the people from Rough Crafts and their look was inspired by BMW ‘snowflake’ rims so they fit perfectly into this design. This bike also features some custom-made and reliable 330 mm brake discs. Wheels are wrapped with Diablo Superbike slicks made by Pirelli Taiwan. Bottom line, this Bavarian Fistfighter is a classy and aggressive combination of the vintage BMW bikes and a modern day motorcycle. (Another Rough Crafts creations.)

Scientists use the body's natural immunity to fight infection

The team of scientists in Sweden may have found a substitute for antibiotics to fight infection. In mice, called models, they train the body's natural immune system called innate immune, to weaken and destroy bacteria that cause kidney infection, which often occurs in children.

The innate immune system is the body's first line of defense, and work in two different ways to fight infection. The first way, researchers call "a good anti-bacterial defense," targeting and killing pathogens. Alternatively, the system that causes inflammation-redness, swelling and fever that accompanies illness or injury. It is also an important part of the immune reaction, but also can significantly damage the tissue, and in some cases add to the progress of disease or infection.

"So the question is, can treat infections by stopping the bad parts of the immune defense and keep the antibacterial defenses. This is what we do on the model," says Catharina Svanborg, a professor of clinical immunology at Lund University in Sweden.

She and her fellow researchers found, the second part of the process was controlled by two different molecules, so they simply turn off the inflammatory molecules. By turning off the molecule, researchers can take advantage of the body's immune defense that leads to healing.

"It's surprising because this technology has not been used in this way to treat the infection. So, this is an unexpected finding but it is a logical step that was taken after the show that they are different," she continued.

Svanborg and her colleagues published their findings in the journal Science Translational Medicine. She said the researchers plan to conduct additional trials, to see whether the innate immune system can kill other pathogens, such as the cause of pneumonia.

"This is the same for all the different categories and conceptually, what we do is not to kill the bacteria directly, we harness the immune system such that tissue damage is pressed and the symptoms are suppressed," she explained.

Given the urgency and the more serious antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, Svanborg sure, someday some diseases treated only by using the body's immune system. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | VOA NEWS]

A strange-looking car of Honda

Some time ago, Honda has filed a patent for a vehicle model that has a shape quite strange. The design patent was revealed after submitted by Honda to the European Union Intellectual Property Office on April 25, 2016, and were classified as the cars.

Interestingly, the strange car designer is Ayumu Tsuji, who is also known as a motorcycle designer at Honda R & D. There are several other patents connected with Tsuji, but most of the products related to the form of two-wheeled vehicles, especially scooters.

Not much is revealed in the Japanese automaker patent filling, but it sure looks of this car has a shape like a city car with off-road styling. It also could be a sort of mobility concept or even something else with more applications in the direction of the industry.

The story of Harley-Davidson were swept by the tsunami waves

At first glance the story of Harley-Davidson motorcycle that crossed the Pacific Ocean as far-fetched. However, the story was true. When the tsunami hit Japan in 2011, it also has washed away a 2004 Harley-Davidson Softail Night Train. The motorcycle that is in containers was slammed, swayed and swept away up to thousands of kilometers until stranded at the Haida Gwaii coast in the province of British Colombia, Canada.

"This bike was in the containers which were dragged by the wave as far as 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers) and stranded on an island. The bond rope has been freed. From the plates can be recognized that this motorcycle from Japan," said Bill Davidson, vice president of Harley-Davidson Museum, in a video that sent by Harley Davidson Canada.

Once discovered by an explorer of island, the motorcycle was abandoned for three weeks until finally the representative Harley-Davidson in Canada took it. Before it is taken, the position of the motorcycle has been separated from the container and buried in the sand and sea water.

In the license plate, looked the numbers of 4 28 and the writings in the original Japanese letters. From there they discover the identity of the owner of the motorcycle. Bill continued, when contacted, the owner could not hide his emotions. He said that he had lost three of his family members and possessions in the great disaster.

"Then, we offer to him that we would replace the Harley Davidson motorcycle with new ones. However, he said could not accept it. Then his answer so amazing. He asked that his motorcycle was kept in the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee as a tribute to the tsunami victims," said Bill further.
Harley-Davidson immediately respond to the requests of a Japanese man who was not known his identity by making a special display at the museum with the name 'Harley-Davidson Tsunami Bike'.

The oldest crystals formed from an Asteroid

Some pieces of the oldest rocks on Earth have been discovered, and named Zircon crystals. The researchers also found that the old stones are formed in the crater of which came from the asteroid at the time of the initial formation of the planet. The Zircon crystals are older than 4 billion years, while the Earth itself has an age of 4.5 billion years. And this ancient crystal is arguably in the history of planet Earth.

Fifteen years ago, the first crystal had been made the headlines when the research going into the rock formations that revealed the presence of water on the surface of the Earth after the planet formed. Since the study was published, scientists hope the Zircon crystals can give another answers about the history of this planet.

Previously, the scientists believed that Zircon crystals formed when tectonic plates collide, in a process similar to the disorder that creates the mountains, volcanic activity and earthquakes. However, most researchers believe, the stone was originated of tectonic plates about 3 billion years ago. Thus, Zircon crystals formed about 1 billion years before the tectonic plates can create the stones.

In a recent study conducted by Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, the investigators pursuing the hypothesis that crystals formed in the crater that was created when an asteroid hit the Earth. To test their idea, then the researchers collected the Zircon crystals from Sudbury crater in Ontario, Canada, which have confirmed the second oldest on Earth nearly two billion years old.

"What we found was quite surprising. Many people think the zircon crystals are very old-fashioned not possibly have been formed in the crater, but now we know they may choose," said Gavin Kenny, a researcher from Trinity College Dublin and co-author of the study, as reported by LiveScience on Friday, May 6, 2016.

The impact of this asteroid is made Earth's crust to melt and form a lava lake. Most of the area around the crater heated and starting to cold, on condition that allows the Zircon undergone a process of crystallization.

"Our new findings would fill more than what we know about the Earth," said Kenny further. By determining the origin of the crystals will help the scientists gather how the planet was form in the beginning and how the life began to emerge on the Earth. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | LIVESCIENCE]
