Roaring Excellence of the 1980s: The Track Beast Crafted Exclusively for PPG

ONE-OFF - This exclusive Ferrari Mondial was specifically manufactured for PPG and designated as the Ferrari Mondial T 'Speciale' Pace Car. It holds the distinction of being the only Ferrari to have ever joined the PPG Pace Car Team. The design of this remarkable vehicle was overseen by the prestigious I.DE.A Institute.

During its production, the cost of building this extraordinary car amounted to approximately $1,000,000. Adjusted for inflation in 2019, this figure exceeds $2,000,000. In the current year of 2023, the exact current value of the car is difficult to determine without further information. And what is certain is the exact number above the 2019 figure.

The car was built using the Mondial T chassis #76390, with significant modifications made to the majority of the bodywork compared to the original design. Reportedly, at that time this car was planned to be used for the 1988 Indy500.

According to multiple former employees of the Pace Car team, this particular Ferrari was regarded as the least reliable among all the PPG pace cars. Nonetheless, when functioning properly, it exemplified the excellence typical of Italian exotic cars from that era.

Powering the car is a mid-mounted 4-valve, dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) V8 engine with a displacement of either 3.2 liters or 3.4 liters. This impressive powerplant produces an estimated output of approximately 270 horsepower. Paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, the car achieves a 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) acceleration time of 6.3 seconds. The top speed is estimated at 148 mph.

The car's specifications include an all-aluminum block and head, Bosch Motronic fuel injection, a 4-coil solid-state ignition system, a sturdy tubular and pressed steel structure, oriented carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy body panels, luxurious contoured leather bucket seats, power windows, an adjustable steering wheel, an alarm system, as well as retractable headlights and driving/fog lamps.
However, there was an incident where the car veered off the track, resulting in minor body damage, which was subsequently repaired. In 2004, the Ferrari Mondial was sold at an auction event held by Christie's Auction Hall for €70,500.
