Did a 4-Door Corvette Ever Exist?

Corvette Anomaly - The Corvette has long been an icon of American automotive engineering, known for its sleek design and high-performance capabilities. When people think of a Corvette, they typically envision a two-door sports car built for speed and style. However, there was a time when a rare four-door version of the Corvette existed, defying the traditional image of this legendary vehicle. Unlike the digital renderings that often circulate online, this four-door Corvette was a real car, built in very limited numbers for a select group of buyers.

In the late 1970s, a Pasadena-based company called California Custom Coachworks was commissioned by General Motors to create an exclusive four-door variant of the Corvette. This wasn’t an official Chevrolet model, but rather a custom-built project designed to blend the Corvette’s aggressive performance with the practicality of a four-door sedan. The result was the 1980 Corvette America, an elongated version of the classic sports car, unlike anything seen before or since.

To create this rare vehicle, California Custom Coachworks took a standard two-door C3 Corvette and extended its body by 30 inches. This modification added significant weight—approximately 500 lbs—while also drastically altering its appearance. Despite the unconventional design, the car retained the Corvette’s signature performance and styling cues.

Only six units were ever produced, with one serving as the prototype and the remaining five delivered to customers. Today, it is believed that only two of these unique vehicles have survived. One of these rare four-door Corvettes, painted in a striking shade of red, surfaced for sale in 2019 at the NBS Auto Showroom. Its vibrant exterior was matched by an equally bold red interior, covering everything from the seats to the dashboard and seat belts.

The odometer showed just 20,000 miles, as the car had primarily been used for auto shows rather than regular driving. Given its extreme rarity, the price tag of $35,000 was considerably higher than the cost of a standard Corvette at the time. However, for dedicated collectors, the exclusivity and historical significance of this model made it a worthwhile investment.
With such a small number ever built, the 1980 Corvette America remains one of the most unusual and elusive Corvettes in history. While it may not have achieved mainstream success, it stands as a fascinating chapter in the story of this legendary sports car. Those lucky enough to own one today possess a truly unique piece of automotive history—one that continues to captivate enthusiasts and collectors alike.*** [EKA [30032021] | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | CARBUZZ | DESIGNYOUTRUST | NBS AUTOSHOWROOM ]
