Elegance Meets Innovation: The Iconic Cadillac with Italian Flair
ONE-OFF - In the early 1950s, America was captivated by the sleek, aerodynamic designs of fighter jets. This fascination extended beyond aviation and began to influence various aspects of society, including automotive design. During this period, two automotive enthusiasts, Harry Birdsall, an artist, and Joe Mascari, a well-known contractor from New York, decided to channel their passion for cars and design into creating something extraordinary. They envisioned a sports car that would embody the streamlined style of the era while exuding the luxury and elegance of American craftsmanship.

With their vision in mind, Birdsall and Mascari embarked on a journey to create a unique American sports car. They wanted something that would stand out, something that would capture the imagination of the public and set a new standard in automotive design. The result of their collaboration was the Cadillac Elegante, a luxurious coupe built on the chassis of a 1953 Cadillac. The car was designed to be a masterpiece, a symbol of style and sophistication that would appeal to the most discerning customers in the high-end market.

To bring their dream to life, Birdsall and Mascari enlisted the help of Albrecht Goertz, a legendary automotive designer who would later gain fame for his work on the BMW 507 and the Datsun 240Z. Goertz was tasked with infusing the Cadillac Elegante with a sense of elegance and luxury that would set it apart from anything else on the road. His designs for the Elegante were sophisticated, with a focus on creating a vehicle that was not only beautiful but also a true representation of American luxury.

Once Goertz completed the design, the next step was to turn those images into reality. The car's chassis and design blueprints were sent to Carrozzeria Rocco Motto in Turin, Italy. This renowned automotive coachbuilder took on the challenge of constructing the Cadillac Elegante, a task that required 30 months to complete. During this time, Rocco Motto's team painstakingly built the car's body, crafted all the necessary hardware, and assembled everything onto the 126-inch wheelbase of the Cadillac chassis.

One of the most striking features of the Cadillac Elegante was its two-folded convertible hard roof. This futuristic and unique retractable roof was crafted from the remnants of a burned Cadillac Series 62 convertible roof found at a Cadillac dealership in White Plains. The innovative use of materials, combined with the car's overall design, made the Elegante a true standout in the automotive world.

The Cadillac Elegante's luxurious design was further accentuated by the extensive use of gold. The car's four-headlight housing, windshield frame, door handles, convertible roof, trunk trim, and even the hidden license plate frames were all made of bronze and then coated with 24-carat gold. The aluminum trim and hubcaps were also gilded in gold, adding to the car's opulent appearance.

The exterior of the Cadillac Elegante was painted in a stunning pearl white, which perfectly complemented the dark red wine-colored Italian leather interior. The combination of these colors and materials created a vehicle that was not only visually striking but also exuded an air of sophistication and luxury. The car's beauty was so captivating that it even moved a young woman to exclaim in public, "Why it's so beautiful it's indecent!"

Over the years, the Cadillac Elegante changed hands several times, especially after the death of Harry Birdsall in 1960. In 1997, the car was rediscovered by Dick and Bob Birdsall, who found it in a severely damaged state after Hurricane Andrew had passed. Determined to restore the Elegante to its former glory, the Birdsall brothers spent over 16 years painstakingly recovering the car. Their dedication paid off when the Cadillac Elegante won the People's Choice Award at the 2014 Amelia Island Concours, a fitting tribute to a car that had captured the imagination of so many.
The story of the Cadillac Elegante is not just a tale of automotive design; it's a story of passion, creativity, and the pursuit of excellence. Birdsall and Mascari's dream of creating a car that would stand the test of time was realized in the Cadillac Elegante, a car that continues to be admired for its beauty and craftsmanship. As we look back at this iconic vehicle, it serves as a reminder of the incredible things that can be achieved when visionaries come together to create something truly extraordinary.*** [EKA [04032020] | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | THE OLD MOTOR ]
