The legend of VW Golf MKII double engined

The name of VW Golf is more commonly known as a versatile hatchback car, especially Golf GTI which has more powerful. However, as fast as these VW Golf of course not a match competitor for the Audi Quattro S1 in the arena of races like Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as The Race to the Clouds, is an annual race for hillclimb cars and motorcycles to climb the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA. The track covers a distance of about 12.42 miles (19.99 km) with a distance of more than 156 rounds, climbing as high as 4,720 feet (1,440 m) from the start at Mile 7 on the Pikes Peak Highway till the finish line at the height of 14,110 feet (4,300 m).

Beside intend to make the Audi Quattro S1 rival car on the Pike Peak race, also to prove the performance of VW Golf, in 1985 the German famous automotive giant created a special Golf to participate in annual event of the Pikes Peak Hillclimb.

Yes, not just any car made, the VW Golf MkII Pikes Peak is specially made with 2 engines, namely 1 is behind the hood to drive the front wheels, and another engine mounted in the rear seat position to provide power for the rear wheels, so these car can moving with the front wheels, rear wheels, and 4WD.

In 1985, each of the VW Golf MkII's engine used an Oettinger's naturally-aspirated 1.8-liter unit. Once race in the Pikes Peak event, it turns out the machines are also overwhelmed with the peak's high, as a result there is a lack of oxygen intake for the combustion chamber, thus the car only able to finish the race in third place in the Group-B.

Learning from mistakes, VolksWagen never gave up and returned to race on the Pikes Peak in 1986. This time, the VW Golf MkII carried 2 units of turbo-1.3-liter engine taken from VW Lupo. But once again VW still has not managed to conquer the Pikes Peak Hillclimb race and must admit the toughness of the Group-B's monster Audi Sport Quattro S1.

The last attempt of VW Golf MkII double engined in 1987 to conquer Pikes Peak increasingly became, then they built a VW Golf on a tubular chassis as the home of 2 units of 1.8 GTI 16V engine. In addition, the engines of these unique VW Golf is also given turbo forced induction device, and each machine connected with a Hewland's 5-speed manual transmission to channel its 640 hp of power and drive all four wheels.

The VW Golf MkII double engined is almost won on this legendary race.
