BMW was confirming will add its i8 variant with the roadster models, which will be rolled up to two years ahead. The BMW i8 roadster first debuted at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show as a concept car.
However, the i8 roadster development project was delayed several times and the German automotive giant instead prioritize the BMW i8 coupe production. In fact, the concept that debuted in China is actually a prototype of the production version.

The news was confirmed by the statement of the CEO of BMW, Harald Krueger was called the i8 roadster will enter into manufacturing production line up in 2018. Krueger did not mention in detail the car's figure, but did not rule this variant would be present with the roofless version.
As quoted from Autonews, the base platform of i8 roadster later would adopt the facelift version of the i8 family. Thus, the plug-in hybrid car is eventually going to produce more power and farther mileage.

Krueger also noted with satisfaction the battery performance of the latest i8, makes the car can run as far as 300 kilometers from previously only 190 kilometers. Some reports mention, the next generation i8 power will becoming 400 hp, up from current output at the numbers of 354 horse power.
