A prototype of electric flavoring fork which generates a salty taste by stimulating the tongue with electricity, has been developed in Japan. The fork developed through the "electric flavoring" technology is being investigated by Hiromi Nakamura of Rekimoto Lab, Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, University of Tokyo.
The study is the application of "electrical tests to generate a sense" that is used to test whether the taste cells in the tongue functioning or not. And proved that the tongue can taste salty or sour taste when channeled by electricity.

The electric flavoring fork is targeted for those who cut their salt intake, or dieting salt such as patients with hypertension. This time, the fork prototype prepared to "Restaurant Without Salt" which offers dishes without salt.
The fork handle contains electrical circuits and a battery that can be recharged. When the user enters a fork head of food into the mouth while pressing the buttons on the handle of the fork, electricity will flow to the tongue.
Levels of saltiness varies, depending on eating habits, age, and so on. There are three levels of saltiness provided. The prototype has a price of ¥2,000 (or about Rp.2.3 million) does not include the price of a fork.
The electric flavoring fork generates not only a salty taste but sour and metallic tastes. Thanks to the help of the cooking experts, found the fact that spices such as pepper and garlic easier salty, as quoted by Japan Today. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | JAPAN TODAY]
