An exotic Mercer-Cobra Roadster

As quoted from RM Auction, in an auction held in Monterey on August 20, 2011, an exotic 1965 Mercer-Cobra Roadster custom car finally sold for $660,000.

The Mercer-Cobra Roadster which is the work of Virgil M. Exner Jr., one of GM's leading automotive designers. The car is assembled by Carrozzeria Sibona-Basano by combined the shape of Mercer Raceabout with Cobra, and most of the interior/exterior panels using copper and brass.

The car would; however, represent more than just a modern interpretation of the style of the Raceabout. Combined with the 289 cu. in. V-8 Cobra engine, the concept also is a modern interpretation of the Raceabout's performance. This vehicle was capable of hitting a top speed of 90 mph.

Each panel made of copper and brass coated acrylic paint so that the color does not fade, and the exterior is made with silicon bronze material. The rear lights enclosed in a hole in the rear wheel fender.

Interior trim, rear seats, door panels, and dashboard panels are made of copper, while the steering wheel spokes are made with chromium-copper material. As for its four 16-inches rims given a cover made of brass.

By wrapping the pearl white paint, black leather interior, and the width convex Plexiglas windshield, Mercer-Cobra has been exhibited all over the world in various exhibitions and car contests to promote the application of copper and brass in the automotive world.
