Mysterious Polio-like disease attack Californian children

More than six children in California were attacked syndrome is a very rare disease and polio similar to last year, crippling the feet or hands of these children in a few days, researchers at Stanford University explains.

The disease is still under investigation and it looks very unusual, but Dr. Keith Van Haren from Children's Hospital Lucile Packard Children warned on Monday, February 24, 2014 that children sudden leg weakness or paralysis should immediately see a doctor.

"This disease resembles but is not the same as polio," he said. "But this is serious. Majority of the children that we have seen so far and his leg has not been recovered."

But doctors are not sure whether it was the virus or the other, he said. So far there are 20 cases in the whole country. "At the moment it seems not a big epidemic, but a very rare phenomenon," he said.

One of the victims of this disease is Sofia Jarvis, 4, of Berkeley. Initially he was exposed to asthma-like symptoms two years ago, but then stopped moving his left arm and was paralyzed until now.

Van Haren, who diagnose Sofia, said the polio vaccines protect children from disease, but he emphasized's still important for children to get the vaccine.. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | GLOBAL NEWS]
