Air pollution triggers Lung cancer

Currently, the air we breathe is polluted by cancer-causing substance and is officially classified as carcinogenic to humans by the World Health Organization (WHO). On October 17, 2013, the WHO's cancer research agency said that air pollution has been shown as the cause of lung cancer.

The pollution sources include, car exhaust fumes, power plants, emissions from agriculture and industry, as well as heating in homes. WHO said that the classification should be regarded as a strong message to the government to take action.

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has been classifies air pollution in the same category as tobacco smoke, UV radiation, and plutonium. The agency said the air pollution is known to cause heart and lung disease, but the evidence is now emerging suggests that the air pollution could also trigger cancer.

Recent IARC's data indicate 223 thousand deaths from lung cancer worldwide is caused by air pollution. More than half thought to occur in China and other East Asian countries. The rapid industrialization has led to foggy skies in Beijing and other major cities in China.

The data also show there is a possibility of air pollution associated with bladder cancer. Dr. Kurt Straif of IARC, said that the air we breathe is being polluted due to a mixture of cancer-causing substances. "We now know that the outdoor air pollution is not only a great risk for general health, but also leading environmental causes of death due to cancer."

Cancer Research UK said that everyone understands the risks of air pollution. "Although air pollution increases the risk of lung cancer, there are other things that have a much larger effect, especially smoking," said Dr. Julie Sharp, head of health information at the charity institute.
