How was the Ice keeping the Earth's temperature?

What would happen if the ice did not float on the surface of water. A chemistry professor from the University of Nottingham, England, Martyn Poliakoff, revealed that group of the floating ice apparently has a very important role in keeping the Earth's temperature.
"If you dip the ice cubes into a glass of water and then the ice sank to the bottom of the glass, it would end up with water that is warm. And this is what likely could be disastrous if it happened on Earth," Poliakoff said as quoted from The Huffmgton Post, on August 14, 2013.

The Earth will be much hotter planet if the ice did not float on the surface of water. Furthermore, he said a greater effect can occur and affect the Earth's heat conditions if the ice mountains on the planet, such as the broad expanse of ice in the Arctic was drowned.

"The Earth will be hotter than its temperature today," said Poliakoff, assuming no ice at the North Pole that floats on the water surface. According to him, when sea water freezes and becomes ice floats, the layer will regulate the global climate by reflecting solar radiation back and prevent heat reaching the water beneath it.

"Especially in certain areas, such as the Arctic, where summer daylight can last up to 24 hours, the sea ice is very significant role reflecting back the sun's radiation," he said.
