An Economical and Eco-friendly 6-cylinder engined bike concept

BMW, a German well-known vehicle manufacturer is often made 6-cylinder inline engine to be applied to a car or truck. This configuration engine has many advantages. One of them is the largeer power generated but very delicate and more easily controlled. However, BMW is now trying to implement a 6-cylinder engine to their motorcycle concept.

But by using a 6-cylinder engine configuration is not favorable for motorcycles. Why? For one thing, the burden of which is borne by a bike much heavier and laterally elongated shape that makes the motorcycle becomes too wide.

Departed from this problem, BMW feel challenged to keep using the 6-cylinder engine in their concept motorcycle. To maintain a slim body, BMW eventually redesigned their 6-cylinder engine in order to get the engine dimensions is slightly wider than a 4-cylinder engine in general. So BMW makes an engine with capacity of 1,300 cc which has over stroke character (the longer step than the piston diameter) and the gap between the cylinders are made extremely thin.

Weight reduction is also done in camshafts and connecting road designing which has a weight as light as possible. Actually with the reduction only in weight and dimensions, which in the power to weight ratio the BMW Motorrad Concept 6 is superior to gain great power.

But BMW still concerned for the best constructing to get the center gravity as much as possible. The move comes with selection of the 55 degrees cylinder tilted forward. In addition, BMW also chose a dry sump system works with an integrated oil tank in the rear of the engine that allows the engine to be very low and flat.

Hollow-bore camshafts and very light connecting rods plus not needing a balancing shaft, shaves pounds from the engine. With the engine mounted on the bottom and masses concentrated around the center of gravity would make the BMW Motorrad Concept 6 is more easily controlled. Electrical auxiliary units and their drive gear are positioned behind the crankshaft in the free space above the gearbox to reduce width.

With all these efforts, the BMW Motorrad Concept 6 is yet to disclose the power that capable to generated by this motorcycle concept. Power is said to be similar to what you would get from a 1,300, perhaps 170 hp. Through their official release, BMW only claimed torque of 130 Nm or 96 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm and can continue to be driven up to 9,000 rpm.

In addition to fast, this bike is also claimed to be Eco-friendly by implementing a few features such as the LED lights use, also said its fuel consumption is also economical with the implementation of E-gas technology. Cool isn't it? Moreover, BMW designed the BMW Motorrad Concept 6's look, with the aura of a harmonious mix between classic café racer with modern elements but still in sporty typical BMW style. BMW says initial intentions for the engine are in a touring platform of some sort, but its capabilities mean it can easily be used in a wide variety of bikes. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | BMW MOTORRAD]
