In the study, the researchers asked the participants saw 64 face pictures and assessing certain emotions
levels of them. The participants turned out to assess the parent's face
looked more sad and angry faces than younger people, despite the fact
that all the faces in the photo has a neutral expression.
Wrinkles on the face was causing mouth looked down and frowned. The expression can be misconstrued accentuate perceived as anger or sadness. "It could also occur when a doctor examines a patient, he thinks his patient is feeling pain because of the puckered facial expression," said Carlos Garrido, doctoral candidate in social psychology at Penn State University.
Need
further research to confirm these findings. But for now, the results do
not fit the stereotype of elderly people. The researchers found that
there was no relationship between the level of sadness or anger such as
that supposed by the participants through their assessment from the
elderly's face is as has been experienced in their real life.
Earlier studies showed that young people
who have had problems in recognizing emotional facial expressions
depicted in the elderly. In a study published in the journal
Experimental Social Pychology, young people were asked to rate the
facial expression of a computer showing happy, sad, and angry.
Participants considered the face of the young man's face is more
expressive than the older people.
"In
other words, young people assess the elderly facial images showing
'mixed' emotions, not the actual emotion to be conveyed," said Ursula
Hess, researchers who is also professor of psychology from Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany.
Hess
said it is possible stereotypes affect the assessment. "Although not
associate the older people with sadness, but the young people associate
the older people with some of the characteristics that they assume
associated with sadness," she said. *** [EKA | FROM VARIOUS SOURCES | LIVESCIENCE | SATWIKA MOVEMENTI | KORAN TEMPO 4247]
