2013 World Car of The Year

Volkswagen Golf VII finally crowned as the 2013 World Car of the Year. This sensational hatcback beat some tough competitors, including the Porsche Boxster, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Toyota 86/GT 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S. The victory of the latest generation of VW Golf after assessed by 66 jury which is the automotive journalists from 23 countries in the world.

For the VW Golf, this victory was the 17th since the last generation of the car was introduced in November, 2012. According to the jury, this VW Golf VII deserves to be a winner of 2013 World Car of The Year because the car is considered fresh, has progressive design, carrying a great new engine, and is equipped with abound of safety systems and features. The Volkswagen CEO, Martin Winterkorn, said to win the award again shows the Golf is, and remains, in a class of its own all around the world.

The winner  of 2013 World Car of The Year was announced on March 28, 2013, that coincide with the 2013 New York International Auto Show. Previously the prime candidate of the winner of 2013 World Car of The Year has re-filtered by the jury.

In an announcement that made at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the WCOTY jury set four major nominees who will fight to earned the prestigious title. The four cars that was chosen until this stage (sorted alphabetically) Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche Boxster/Cayman, Toyota 86/GT 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S, and Volkswagen Golf VII.

Here weren't explained why the jury set four nominees on this third phase. Though the referring of the original plan, at this stage the jury should only define three nominees. 2013 WCOTY is the second award title that has occurred since 2009. This year the committee has done a selection on the 42 cars that classified have met the requirements.

From all of the cars, then the jury reduce the number of contestants to 10 finalists through a vote which was announced on January 31, 2013. The whole car that competed in the 2013 WCOTY is the cars that has been sold in at least in two continents since January 1, 2012 until May 30, 2013.

Last year, Volkswagen UP! chosen as 2012 World Car of the Year. While this year all of the four contestants have the same opportunities, although Volkswagen Golf a few days earlier had won the prestigious title as the 2013 European Car of the Year.

While the Golf won the trophy for overall top honours, the Porsche Boxster/Cayman was deemed the best of the best for enthusiasts, being named 2013 World Performance Car of the Year. Pipping the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and the combined entry of the Toyota 86/GT 86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S, the sports car’s win is the German marques second in succession with the Porsche 911 winning last year.
