The Famous Prisons in the World

The prison is a place that shunned and feared by many people in the world. For criminals, prison could undermine the honor. For scholars or politicians, prison instead be a place to finalize ideology, thinking, and leadership. Prison is also synonymous with torture and suffering.

Of course, nobody wants to go to prison, but there are some prisons that you really, really don’t want to be imprisoned as an inmate. Being in jail is only part of the problem, staying alive is the bigger issue.  Here are the stories related to the horrible prisons in the world.

The tragic story of 111 inmates massacre that have occurred at Carandiru Prison in Brazil. The incident which occurred in 1992 was started from the riots between inmates. Later police bring in their personnels to dampen unrest. But what happened was the massacre incident.

In Bang Kwang Prison (Bangkok Hilton) in Thailand, many inmates who suffer from mental disorders while serving time in this jail. The reason, the inmates have to wear leg irons in the first three months and getting an inhumane prison facilities such as given limited food, if they want more they have to work for another inmates or guards to pay for the food.

At ADX Florence Supermax Prison in Colorado, United States can occupy 490 male prisoners and each prisoner is kept isolated for 23 hours in the first year depending on their conduct. No wonder if in prison, many inmates suffer from mental stress to depression. ADX Florence SuperMax Facility contains the most dangerous gangs in the world. Each cell has a desk, stool and a bed made up of concrete and a toilet; it is also called "A Clean Version of Hell".

Perhaps, the most famous prison in the world is the Alcatraz Prison in California, USA. The prison is also known as The Rock. The island where the Alcatraz prison was founded is also named as the Devil's Island. The prison was built in the 1920's and located in the small island surrounded by the sea. Human rights are not respected there due to inhumane regulation and cruel actions of the warden. Even the inmates were not allowed to talk to each other. Because that inhuman action, the Alcatraz prison was closed in 1963.

In the 1930's, the hair of all inmates at San Quentin Prison, California cut up to bald. They are then forced to use a bucket to eat in their small cell without light. The racial riots are common happened in this prison because the number of guards and inmates was not balanced.

The brutal torture on the inmates make Rikers Island prison in New York to be famous where is 46% of youth inmates have mental illness. In 2003, six inmates desperate suicide in their cell due to not stand with the mental pressure on Rikers Island Prison.

Slavery by guards against inmates or between inmates, was very common happen at Prison de la Sanin Paris, France. Cases of prisoner rape by the other prisoners are also very high. No wonder that many inmates could not stand, even to commit suicide while incarcerated here.

The Guantanamo prison in Cuba is one of the famous prison in the world. The Guantanamo prison is a prison complex run by the U.S. military which is located in the United States naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Another terrorist prison camp run by the U.S. military such as Bagram in Afghanistan and Abu Ghraib in Iraq also no less cruel. The detainees who inhabit this prison are those who are regarded as terrorists by the U.S. authorities, and many of them go into prison without trial. Although today the International community wants U.S to close the Guantanamo, but this place still kept a lot of stories about cruel actions from the jailers to detainee (until now Guantanamo has not been closed by the United States).

Meanwhile, due to the lack of an existing facility in La Sabanetaa Prison in Venezuela makes rampant disease outbreaks in prisons. The cholera outbreak claimed the lives of about 700 inmates there.

Tadmor prison is located in the deserts of Syria, Tadmor is known for its extreme harsh conditions, physical torture and many more brutal acts. Even guards are found killing the inmates tying them in and dragging them until they are dead; they are found chopping the body parts of the prisoners who are killed by them. In 1980, the military soldiers had massacred 500 people prisoners in their cells at Tadmor Prison in Syria. And caused the prisoners are brutally killed. Tadmor was closed in 2001 but it was reopened in June 15, 2011.

One of the worst prisons in the world which is also famous for its one incident between the guards and the prisoners that killed 10 inmates and 23 were highly injured and 9 in critical condition. Prisoners are tortured badly by hunger strikes, physical torture that includes wolfhounds attack on naked body, the guards even play with the prisoners by taking them into a fake court and give them death penalty and are hanged. In 1981-1984 period, 34 inmates at Diyarbakr prison in Turkey died of both mental and physical torture. Cases of sexual perversion are also rife in the prison, making this prison is known as the most violent prison in Turkey.

What about Indonesia? Indonesia's most famous prison located on the island prison of Nusakambangan in the southern province of Central Java. On the island stands a few correctional institutions such as Permisan, Besi and Pasir Putih Penitentiary. Many high profile criminals, including corruptors and terrorists, imprisoned here.
