Coffee, as is believed by many to have been proven most effective to repel drowsiness. However, the side effects of coffee are less favored because the car drivers must often stop looking for the toilet.
As an alternative solution is with installed the blue color lights in the car's cabin. Scientists at Universite Bordeaux Segalen, recently proved that the blue color lights as potent as the effects of caffeine in the cup of coffee for ousting sleepiness. Of course without the frequent urination as happened after coffee drinking.
The findings are expected to be an inspiration to design the car or vehicle safer in the future. By installing the blue color lights as part of the interior design of modern cars, the hope the number of accidents that caused by drowsy drivers to be reduced.
Experiments on 48 drivers who drive on the distance of 400 km shows the error rate is reduced, thanks to the driver who had the blue color lights in their car cabin. The violation of road markings done 15 times by drivers who were have the blue color lights in the car, 13 times by the driver who drank coffee, and 26 times on drivers who do not get anything.
The study says with installed the blue color lights on the car cabin could reduce the driver error rate. |
The research that published in the journal PLoS ONE, it proves that the color of blue can improve alertness by stimulating the retinal ganglion cells. As quoted from the Daily Mail, the cells found in the layer of the retina located at the back of the eyeball. The retinal ganglion cells are also connected with the nerves of consciousness. Therefore the stimulation could increase the secretion or release of melatonin (hormone that makes people be awake and stay alert all night).
From various previous studies that showed that one third of the road accidents victims related to drowsiness. Because drowsiness, the driver could lose alertness, reflexes and the ability of visual perception in the sense of vision decreases. *** [SEPTI | PIKIRAN RAKYAT 03012013]
