Egg Yolks Damage the Blood Vessels?

Egg yolks are rich in nutrients but if consumed regularly has a bad effect on heart health. New research from the University of Western may have you swapping your morning eggs for a healthier option to experience good health benefits and help to prevent heart disease and stroke.  Researchers found that eating eggs yolks may be almost as harmful as smoking for individuals who are at risk for heart disease and stroke. The findings from this study may give some insight into diet modifications that can help with cardiac care for individuals at a high risk for heart disease and stroke.

In a study at the London Health Science Center's University Hospital, researchers found that consuming egg yolk may accelerate coronary artery disease or atherosclerosis. Egg yolks eventually damage blood vessels. This is because the cholesterol in the yolk can clog the carotid artery that supplies blood to the neck and head area.

According to David Spence, neurologists University of Western Ontario, Canada, one of the research team, this could increase the risk of stroke. Research Spence and his team collected approximately 1,200 respondents, women and men with an average age of 61.5 years were related to heart disease.

As quoted from Dailymall, researchers used ultrasound to detect the amount of plaque in the arteries of the respondents. The results showed that the consumption of one egg yolk per day already exceeds the recommended daily intake of cholesterol.

"So people who consume more than three eggs a week or more to accumulate cholesterol in the blood vessels, while high intake of cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular disorders," said Spence. He added that the effects of the consumption of egg yolks from time to time on the increase of plaque in the arteries is independent of gender, cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking, body mass index, as well as whether someone with diabetes. *** [DAILYMAIL | SEPTI | PIKIRAN RAKYAT 25102012]
