Good news for those who have problems with acne. There is recent research on the use of Propionibacterium acnes phages, bacteria-eating virus, as a powerful weapon of destruction acne.
"It means a safe and effective treatment," said Robert Modlin, principal investigator and Chief of Dermatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, Wednesday, October 3, 2012.
Modlin research with scientists from the University of Pittsburgh is published online in the journal mBio-American Society for Microbiology issue of 25 September 2012.
"This method can clear the skin of acne is severe even without leaving a scar," says professor of immunology and molecular genetics at UCLA's Division of Science of Nature.
The presence of acne bacteria-eating viruses known when the scientists studied the interaction of two microbes, namely Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria thriving in human skin pores and trigger acne, and Propionibacterium acnes phages, viruses that are naturally programmed to infect and kill the acne bacteria.

Acne Bacteria often undermine the immune system and cause red swollen bumps on the skin that develop into acne. Treatment is done by reducing the amount of acne bacteria in the skin.
"We know that sex hormones, facial oil, and the immune system plays a role in acne. But the bacteria P. acnes is a major trigger," said Laura Marinelli, UCLA postdoctoral researcher in Modlin’s lab, who led the study.
The bacteria triggers inflammation in the skin, which in turn gave rise to acne. "The virus is specific only attack bacteria P. acnes and not other types of bacteria such as E. coli," said Marinelli.
