2011 New Species

Throughout 2011, researchers from the California Academy of Sciences adds 140 new members in the family tree of the world fauna and flora. The new species they found consisted of 72 arthropods, 31 sea slugs, 13 fish, 11 plants, 9 sponge, coral 3, and 1 species of reptiles.

140 To describe this new species, more than a dozen scientists academy is deployed with the help of dozens of taxonomic experts from various countries.

1. GOPHERUS MORAFKAI
Gopherus Morafkai.
Gopherus Morafkai tortoise is a new species of turtle from Arizona and Mexico. DNA analysis confirmed that these species differ by Gopherus agassizii, which was described in 1861.

2. PRISTIOPHORUS NANCYAE
Pristiophorus Nancyae.
African pygmy shark saws are obtained from a depth of 488 meters off the coast of Mozambique. This shark has a characteristic form of an elongated nose like a sword, or "rostrum", which is filled with sharp teeth and are used as weapons. These sharks swim with schools of fish crashing with rostrum swinging forward and backward to injure their prey, then turned to "pick up" the victim.

3. SQUATINA CAILLIETI
Squatina Caillieti.
Squatina caillieti is a new species of angel shark are obtained at a depth of 1,200 feet in the waters of Luzon Island, Philippines. Angel shark has a flattened body and large fins that resemble wings.

4. CAMBESSEDESIA UNCINATA
Cambessedesia Uncinata.
This beautiful flowering plant is new species of shrub from Brazil.

5. SPARISOMA SP.
Sparisoma sp.
This new type of parrot fish found in Sao Tome.

6. CHLAENIUS PROPEAGILIS
Chlaenius Propeagilis.
This new species of beetle from China.

7. GAULTHERIA PAUCINERVIA (FRITSCH)
Gaultheria Paucinervia.
This is a herbaceous plant species that only grows on the slopes east of Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia.

8. CHELIDONURA ALISONAE (GOSLINER)
Chelidonura Alisonae.
Nudibranch or sea slug new type is derived from the East Pacific. Nudibranch uses his striking colors to warn predators that dare to approach that they are toxic and not good to eat. Academy team found six sea slugs from the tropical Indo-Pacific waters.

9. CHELIDONURA MANDROROA (GOSLINER)
Chelidonura Mandroroa.
New species of sea slugs from the Indo-Pacific.

10. ANTHOPTILUM GOWLETTHOLMESAE
Anthoptilum Gowletthomesae.
Marine organisms that resemble pen comes from Australian waters. This species is able to stick on the surface of the stone.

11. MALAGIELLA RANOMAFANA
Malagiella Ranomafana.
New species of spider this is one of 10 species new goblin spider that scientist of the California Academy of Sciences who described in 2011.

12. HYPOPONERA AUSTRALTO
Hypoponera Australto
