Materialistic People Marriage Tend to be Unhappy

A new research found that marriages are less materialistic people are happier than couples who do not too concerned with material possessions. "The effect applies at all levels of income," said Jason Carroll, professor of family life at Brigham Young University.

Carroll said the most unsatisfactory marriage is when a husband and wife is very concerned material. "Our study found that couples who both have properties that face the higher the level of materialism is the biggest challenge."

Carroll and his team studied materialism and marriage as only a few researchers who examine how attitudes toward money affect a couple's relationship. "We want to see it meaning and value that people bring into the family life and marriage," he said.
Researchers collected questionnaires online from 1.734 married couples. They were asked to answer questions about the level of satisfaction of the marriage relationship, the pattern of conflict, communication, marital stability, and other factors. They were also asked to rate the phrase "have a lot of money and possessions are not important to me." People who agree to be categorized as non-materialistic, whereas that does not agree qualify as materialistic.

Of the pair, about 14 percent of non-materialistic couples and 11 percent consist of a highly materialistic wife while her husband was not. The pattern was turned the other 14 percent. About 20 percent consists of couples who are both materialistic, while the rest entered the middle group that is not too materialistic or the importance of money.

Carroll said the marriage in which one partner materialistic much worse in all aspects of marriage than non-materialistic. Non-materialistic spouse has a life of marriage 10-15 percent better in all categories, whether in marriage life, stability, and lower levels of conflict. *** [LIVESCIENCE | KORAN TEMPO 3681]
