iPad For Flight Operations

Aircraft operating support systems are an integral part of electronic technology. A variety of systems installed in aircraft is a device developed by implementing electronic technology. Until one of progress or the creation of a new tool in the field of electronics is likely to be exploited by developers of the operating system or the procurement of aircraft for the creation of devices that can make the operation of aircraft for the better.

So when Apple Computer Inc. development company producing iPad. Stakeholders, data providers and map fly, Jeppesen, immediately saw iPad the device was first introduced by (former) CEO of Apple Inc., Steve Jobs, last year was very suitable to function as a device Elecronic Flight Bag (EFB).

Last February the U.S. aviation authority, FAA, for the first time issued a license to use iPad as EFB (Electronic Flight Bag), the electronic flight data renderer. Permission granted to charter aircraft operator NetJets. iPad is used NetJets can function as a EFB application after installed Mobile TC (Terminal Chart) made by Jeppesen.

With application installed Jeppesen Mobile TC, iPad-EFB can display a number of Jepp's aeronautical chart data needed pilots to fly the route. The data can be accessed through the iPad includes a map of flying, SID (standard instrument departure approach) procedures before landing, and the STAR (standard terminal arrival).

Maps help pilots fly in to take a route, with among others displaying the route pattern and obstacles to be bypassed. Meanwhile, the SID and STAR, respectively, the procedure or guidelines when the plane take-off or landing at the airport.

Conventional format of the map to fly Jeppesen how hardcopy printed on paper. The idea of the issuance of digital map format fly the delivery device called the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) media viewer that uses a portable computer or tablet. iPad now, with all its advantages as well as the operating system specification, is regarded as the "ideal" to be refitted to EFB. Book-sized dimensions and light weight (0.7 kg) makes it practical to use pilot, including when in the cockpit. In addition, the ease and speed of updating the data (on line) or find the stored data into another advantage of using iPad as EFB.

Before finally approved by the FAA, the use of iPad-EFB preceded a series of tests. Among the operation when the aircraft at an altitude of 51,000 feet (15,000 m). Test results demonstrated the reliability of portable computers such as Apple products EFB devices. In addition, also demonstrated the absence of interference effects between the iPad-EFB and the aircraft, especially avionics. Based on the results of such testing, the FAA approved the use of iPad as the EFB with Jeppesen Mobile TC application. Only a portable installation and operation of a standalone (not connected with the other aircraft instrument), as well as software applications are limited, making the iPad-EFB functions are categorized as Class-1, the lowest classification of EFB. Further development to increase the level of "Class" iPad-EFB is very possible.
United Continental Holdings, Inc. has decided to supply all 11,000 of its pilots with iPads to be used as electronic flight bags. The company says this will allow ir to conduct its flight operations with paperless flight decks and thus save time, money and fuel, while also reducing emissions and reducing the risk of muscle injuries to its pilots. Following the use of iPad-EFB by NetJets, the flight operator of United Continental Holding Inc. in August 2011 and then distribute the iPad with Jeppesen Mobile TC  application on its pilots. Giving primary consideration, the iPad allows the information needs of pilots will fly the updated information can be met. "Flight deck (cockpit) without paper or paperless represent the future of aviation," said United's Vice President of Flight Operations, Capt. Fred Abbott. *** [M.
