Does Stress Make Your Hair Turn White?

In contrast to his appearance when running for president, now President Barack Obama's hair looks white. When asked about it, Obama said the discoloration is caused by genes, not the pressure of his job as head of state.

"My grandfather was gray when it was 29 years old. I suspect it will happen. Only, it happened to coincide with the period of my presidency," Obama said, as quoted by ABC News.

Biologists say that Obama's statement is true. Heredity is the dominant factor that controls the process of graying hair. Gene 50-year-old president was matched with the results of the study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. The article reported that Caucasian man with gray in the middle age of 30, the average person on the end of the 30th Asia, and Africa in the mid-40.

In theory, bleached hair when the hair follicles to grow old. Follicles had 10-30 lifetime reproductive cycle and produce the enzyme catalase.

These enzymes break down other chemicals that are produced naturally by the hair follicle cells, called hydrogen peroxide. Parents have little peroxide catalase so rampant and white hair.

Biologists Gerald Weissmann, who is responsible for the FASEB journal, said there was no evidence that stress causes gray hair. "Look hair young soldiers in Israel. There's nothing scary gray despite the stress," he said. "Genes are the answer."

Andrzej Slominski, expert dermato pathology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, certain environmental factors, such as stress, are also influential. "This phenomenon is seen in the Second World War soldier who suddenly turn gray overnight," said Slominski.

Ralf Pope, researchers from the University of Luebeck, hypothesized that stress hormones trigger the production of free radicals. It is there the possibility of damaging the melanocytes, self-producing pigment in the hair follicles. *** [LIVESCIENCE | KORAN TEMPO 3685]
