The Secret Behind the Explosion of Jellyfish Populations

Jellyfish are aquatic invertebrates and they’re found in every ocean in the world. (Picture from: http://save-as.org/)
Semi-transparent and soft and slow movements that make a jellyfish not regarded as one of dangerous predators in the ocean. But recent research indicates that a jellyfish plankton-eating fish can compete in terms of their effectiveness and devour their prey from the food to energy use.

"These findings may help explain why the population explosion. Jellyfish in a number of ecosystems after the pollution, overfishing, or other problems that interfere with populations of other ocean dwellers," said lead researcher, Jose Luis Acuna, professor of ecology at the University of Oviedo in Spain.

Proficiency jellyfish catch their prey may be hard to believe, because most of the jellyfish could not see and have to hit their prey as they move through the water.

The secret turned out to be the body that resemble jellyfish is composed of gelatin and water, thus making them much bigger than sardines, for example. "As many as 96 percent of his body consists of water and high salt content, while other animals body of water contains only 65 percent," said Acuna.

In a number of ecosystems mengalamj overfishing, like in Japanese waters and offshore Namibia, jellyfish developed rapidly. "The loss of top predators due to the pressure and eventually disrupt the marine food chain dominated by a jellyfish," says Graeme Hays, professor of marine biology at Swansea University in Wales.

Very watery body is one advantage that the jellyfish. "With an unusually large body with low carbon content, means of jellyfish instead of tempting food for predators," said Hays. "Very few animals eat jellyfish because it does not bring benefits." *** [LIVESCIENCE | KORAN TEMPO 3653]
