Giant Meteorite Found in China

A giant space rock, which can be categorized as the largest meteorite ever known, discovered in a remote mountainous region in northwest China. Large and odd-shaped rock was found in the Altai Mountains in Xinjiang Province, China. Meteorite expert at the planetarium Beijing, Zhang Baolin, leading a small team to investigate reports of alleged meteorite stone that was in early July 2011. The team must travel long distances to the top of the mountains as high as 2,900 meters. "This is a very large iron meteorites," Zhang said, in excerpts from the China Central Television. "This is probably the second largest iron meteorite, which can cause a sensation, both in China and among the world's meteorite experts. New from out our solar system and have an enormous scientific value." Big brown stone that protruded from under a larger chunk of granite, Sky and Telescope magazine reported that chunks of rock visible above the ground a length of 2.3 meters wide and about 1 meter. Zhang estimates the mass of the meteorite may range from 25-30 tons. Giant rocks is likely to surpass China's largest stone meteorite, weighing 28 tons, which was discovered in 1898 in the same region. Meteorite Xinjiang will become the findings are very interesting for the scientific community. "Especially when the stone has been confirmed as a meteorite," said Meenakshi Wadhvva, Director of the Center for Meteorite Studies at Arizona State University. "If the stone is verified as an iron meteorite, it is an important finding." The discovery of meteorites are considered important because most of the space rocks that formed about 4.6 billion years ago, along with the birth of our solar system. The discovery of new meteorites, no matter how large in size, potentially keeping secrets and the history of the formation of our solar system in the past. Wadhwa added, Xinjiang stone photo seems to support the notion that the rock was an iron meteorite. From scratch on the surface of the stone objects known to contain iron-nickel composition. Until now, the largest meteorite ever found has a mass of up to 60 tons and is found in Namibia. Another major meteorite found in Argentina stones weighing 37 tons and 30 tons of a meteorite in Greenland.*** [SPACE | KORAN TEMPO 3603]
